FUT vs FUE
Hair transplantation is a well-established procedure for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia and other forms of hair loss. It involves the redistribution of hair follicles from a donor site, typically the occipital scalp, to areas of thinning or baldness. Two primary techniques are employed: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Excision (FUE).
FUT, also known as the strip method, involves excising a linear strip of scalp from the donor area, followed by microscopic dissection of follicular units. This technique allows for the harvest of a large number of grafts in a single session and often yields high follicle viability. It results in a linear scar and may have a longer recovery period. With trichophytic closure, there will be hair growing through the scar and this makes the scar less visible. There is no need to shave the other hair at the donor area.
FUE involves the individual excision of follicular units using a circular punch, either manually or with motorized assistance. This technique minimizes visible scarring and allows patients to wear shorter hairstyles. FUE is generally less invasive with faster healing, but it is more time-consuming and technically demanding. The transection rate may be higher, and the total number of grafts harvested per session is usually lower compared to FUT.
The choice between FUT and FUE depends on multiple factors including patient preferences, hair characteristics, donor area density, previous surgeries, and long-term goals. Both techniques can produce natural-looking results when performed by experienced surgeons. Advances in surgical instrumentation and technique continue to improve outcomes and expand indications for hair transplantation in both men and women.
